Dr. Tim Welsh: CTRL Lead AI and CAS Fellow
Tim Welsh brings to the Center for Teaching, Research, and Learning (CTRL) a robust background shaped by 20+ years of teaching experience at the intersection of literary studies and digital culture. He earned an M.Ed. in Language Arts as part of the Alliance for Catholic Education at the University of Notre Dame while teaching high school in Lake Charles, LA. Following that, he completed his Ph.D. in English from the University of Washington, specializing in 20th-century fiction and digital humanities, where he was a HASTAC Scholar and Assistant Director of Computer-Integrated Pedagogy for the English department. His research, which addresses contemporary digital culture through the analysis of videogames informed by literary criticism and theory, demonstrates a commitment to interdisciplinary approaches informed by and applied to emerging technologies.
Currently serving as Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Welsh leverages his administrative and leadership experience, including prior roles as chair of the English department and director of composition, to champion innovative pedagogy and curriculum development. His practical experience addressing AI's impact on academic integrity, curriculum, and program development provides a comprehensive understanding of the evolving educational landscape.
Through his partnership with CTRL, Dr. Welsh is dedicated to empowering faculty and students to thrive in the AI era. His work will focus on developing accessible resources, support, and community around improving AI literacy across campus. Dr. Welsh's forthcoming book, Videogames, Literature, and Closeplaying: A Practical Guide, co-authored with Ed Chang, further exemplifies his interdisciplinary approach to scholarship.
As the AI Fellow, Dr. Welsh is available to assist faculty with questions about academic integrity and policies, assignment design, and more. Find his faculty page here.
